A Gradual Approach to Healthier-Looking Skin
Many people who have used strong skin-lightening creams or harsh chemical products experience what is commonly known as the “change-over syndrome” when trying to stop using them.
This can make it extremely difficult to discontinue these products suddenly, as uncomfortable and visible skin reactions may occur during the transition period. These reactions can include:
- Dark patches or uneven skin tone
- Blemishes or pimples
- Swelling or irritation
- Itchy, sensitive, or inflamed skin
Unfortunately, many individuals begin using these products due to peer pressure, misleading promises, or a lack of information regarding the long-term effects of strong creams on the skin.
At New Shades Cover & Beauty Products, we strongly recommend a gradual weaning approach rather than stopping strong creams abruptly. A slow reduction may help minimise discomfort while allowing the skin time to adjust.
Patience and consistency are extremely important during this process.
Suggested Weaning Programme
Step 1 — Initial Transition (2 to 3 Weeks)
After cleansing with Confidence Clear Face Wash with Bergamot:
- Apply Confidence Vitamin E Moisturiser with Collagen every morning
- Apply the strong cream every evening
Alternatively, reverse the routine if preferred.
During this period, use New Shades Cover Cream daily to help maintain even-looking coverage and confidence while your skin adjusts.
Step 2 — Gradual Reduction (3 to 4 Weeks)
Continue with the same routine, but begin reducing the amount of strong cream used by approximately one-third to one-half.
Maintain daily use of:
- Confidence Clear Face Wash with Bergamot
- Confidence Vitamin E Moisturiser with Collagen
- New Shades Cover Cream
Step 3 — Progressive Weaning
Continue gradually reducing the use of the strong cream over time.
For example:
- Skip application every second day for two weeks
- Then every third day for a further two to three weeks
The process may vary from person to person depending on the condition of the skin and the extent of previous product use.
There is no fixed rule or guaranteed timeframe for discontinuing strong creams, as every skin condition is different.
Important Information
Some strong creams may cause significant long-term skin damage, particularly when used incorrectly or over extended periods. In severe cases, certain skin changes may be difficult or impossible to fully reverse.
Over many years of working with problem skin conditions throughout Africa, we have encountered numerous cases of severe skin damage associated with unsafe skin-lightening practices.
Our goal is to encourage safer skincare practices, patience during recovery, and support for healthier-looking skin through responsible skincare routines.
